About Al Anderson

Al Anderson handles YFP’s personal financial planning and asset management functions, where his particular professional passion is working with individuals to determine the best use of their available resources in light of their current situation, likely future, and hopes and values. His community work also echoes this emphasis. He works with local high school students to map their way to a debt-free college graduation, adult couples at his church to resolve financial issues through the implementation of step-by-step planning, and other professionals of the Prescott Estate Planning Council to stay on top of laws and other developments that impact one’s ability to utilize wealth according to their wishes.

Abundant Life

3 big ideas discussed in this episode:

  • Abundance vs. scarcity (naturally wired)
We must consciously learn to work within an era of abundance, even as we are naturally wired for scarcity. (Why is it that in the most wealthy society known to any era or geography we suffer the highest rates of depression and dissatisfaction?)
  • Avoiding distraction
One must actively manage the mental energy devoted to decision making to ensure that our fullest capacities don’t engage in distractions.
  • Comparison kills. We need to develop objective criteria to gauge satisfaction over subjective.

Show Notes:

ABUNDANCE VS. SCARCITY (NATURALLY WIRED

  • The default assumption of consumers is that “more choices, better” but when we look at everywhere we have more choices more than we ever experienced.
  • Maybe the reason why our world is miserable not in spite of their wealth but because of it.
  • There are so many choices around us and if we don’t step back, reflect and think about the choices we’re kind of setting ourselves for a whole lot of X in that selection.

AVOIDING DISTRACTION

  • When we are in a narrow of abundance there’s just so much to look at, one of the things to do is decide when to make decisions.
  • Don’t rock your brain to minor decisions because inevitably they’re just shocking you into what is really important.
  • Set some ground rules for how you would operate this world or operate buying where most choices are therefore made.
  • Don’t make every single situation every single day a big decision.
  • About 9 out of 10 of our options that we are daily confronted with are gonna rule ourselves out if we are value driven.
  • When we see the bigger picture, we are emotionally attached to a certain thing that reduces our trust in that whole decision-making factors as well.
  • Sometimes we are good at making decisions until we cross another decision and it worked out better, anticipate that. But then back up and ask yourselves, “Did it work out to our expectation?” and if so there shouldn’t be any regrets.

COMPARISON KILLS.

  • We can go comparison shop all day and that just gonna absolutely destroy your time and your mental energy, then you’ll gonna lose focus on what’s truly important.
  • Take time to do some brainstorming about what you really wanted and put it on a stickynotes each and everything then put it in a big board and start saying “Look, if you could only get one of those things out of all these experiences what would it be?”.
  • As long as you connect your 3 to 5 and you got few sticky notes there say 6, 8 or 10 then great that’s the bottom we can expect to all of these.
  • You’ll gonna see something better in some way but again look at what you are trying to accomplish we wouldn’t live with so much regret.
