You’ve probably heard of the 80/20 rule.  Marketing experts like Perry Marshall have made it popular by explaining the 80/20 rule and how it applies to sales and marketing.  The rule says that 20 percent of what you do will account for 80 percent of your results.  20 percent of your time during the day will produce 80 percent of the results, and so on and so one.

Here’s why you need to publish a book for your startup business.  Simply because it’s a way to leverage your time and get more people to know you, like you and trust you while you are doing other things.  If you are like me, and most people are, when you read a book you feel more connected and like the author more after reading a book (if it’s good content of course).  You feel like you know them, like them, and trust them (because they are an expert on the topic) much more after reading their book. This is how you put the 80/20 rule in your favor.

START WITH VALUE

The book starts the conversation.  By having a book published, not about you necessarily, but a book that solves a problem or challenge for your clients directly.  A marketing book that teaches you how to generate your first 10 leads.  A productivity book that teaches you how to get more done and free up an hour in your day.  These non-fiction book examples are a one topic book that could lead directly into your business and what you do.

Book sales are great, they are profitable, however it’s the 20% advantage you’ll get by using a book with your startup.  By putting a focus on a high value book for your clients, they will know you, like you, and trust you much faster.

Remember the rule that says you have to make 7 contacts with a client before they do business with you?  Here are 7 contacts.  See a promotion, one, visit the landing page, two, order your book, three, receive the book, four, start reading the book on day one, five, finish reading the book on day two, six, then at the end of the book give a consultation, and they reach out to you, step 7 in the contacts.  By the time they reach you, they already know you, like you, and trust you.
