Travis Rogers: Sport Psychology Advocate and Founder of MindRite Training

Travis Rogers is a dedicated advocate for the mental aspects of sports, a journey that began during his Senior baseball season at New Mexico State University. Named the team's captain, Travis faced personal and team struggles that opened his eyes to the powerful impact of the mental game in sports. Despite high hopes, the intense pressures led him to contemplate quitting—a stark contrast to the joy and camaraderie he once found in the game. After completing the season, he left baseball behind, but this challenging experience ignited a lifelong passion for understanding and improving the athletic mindset.

Sixteen years later, Travis returned to the baseball field as a tee-ball coach for his son's team. While he enjoyed being involved again, he noticed troubling changes in youth sports. Kids were harder on themselves, parents were more demanding, and coaches prioritized winning over creating a positive experience. Determined to make a difference, Travis immersed himself in the field of sport psychology, earning a Master's Degree in Sport & Exercise Science with an emphasis on Sport Psychology.

Through both academic study and practical application, Travis developed a deep understanding of how the proper mindset can lead to optimal experiences, development, and success for athletes.

Summary:

As parents, we all want to see our children thrive, especially when they show a passion for sports. Their joy, personal growth, and athletic development are deeply intertwined with the support and environment we provide. But how exactly can parents maximize these aspects to ensure their children not only enjoy but also benefit holistically from their youth sports experience?

In our latest episode of Ideas & Impact, we delved deep into this topic with expert insights that every sports parent should know.

Creating an Environment of Enjoyment

1. Start with Joy

One of the most important roles you can play as a sports parent is fostering a positive and supportive environment. When children feel encouraged and free of undue pressure, they are more likely to enjoy their sporting experiences. Remember, the goal is for them to have fun while learning and growing.

2. Be Encouraging, Not Overbearing

Encouragement shouldn’t translate to pressure. Instead of focusing on winning, emphasize effort and personal improvement. Celebrate small victories, whether it's a better sprint time or mastering a new skill. Your enthusiasm can be contagious, making your child look forward to each practice
