About Lori Leavitt

As a certified growth and leadership coach, consultant and a technology entrepreneur, Lori is a pivotal asset in helping smart companies stay strong. Her signature program – Aligned MomentumTM – brings nimble practices to grown-up companies. Lori has added unique value to every leader she’s worked with. Every business she’s worked in, with or led has grown and become more profitable or has positioned for a favorable exit. Typically what was achieved was bigger than what had been previously thought to be possible. Her biggest reward is that lives have improved. Prior to founding her first business in 2001, she held leadership, consulting and financial analyst positions in organizations with revenues from $50M to more than $1B and across several industries including manufacturing, distribution, insurance, healthcare and professional services.

3 big ideas discussed in this episode:

  • A quick turn-on-a-dime pivot is most often out of desperation and rarely is successful. The Pivot, instead, is planned and well-orchestrated, involving many shifts by many people. A successful Pivot can lead to extraordinary momentum and performance breakthroughs.
  • As a business “grows up” it naturally, and wisely, becomes more operationally efficient and better at mitigating risk. Often this leads to being less human, and less or not nimble. But there are steps a leader can take to lead a nimble, vibrant business.
  • You can’t change a person but you can… (change their context at work, both in org structure and social norms & values)

Bringing Every Thought Captive, by Jacqueline Barnes

As I have live my Christian life, I see so many believers (Christians) who don’t seem to walk in what they say they believe in conduct, conversation, integrity, peace, provision, relationships, attitudes, thinking, or habits. I don’t believe it’s because they don’t want to, I choose to believe it is because they simply don’t know how to break free of the defeating patterns in their lives.

I was compelled to write from my own experience and actually encouraged by my tribe of sisters to share my passion to see the body of Christ grow up in God and resemble mature offspring. In our natural families, we bear certain resemblance to each other. Is there a reason, we don’t bear any resemblance to our Father?

How we choose to live our lives and show up in life stems from our belief system and our core values. In other words we speak, and behave based on what we think, and believe to be true.

Don’t get me wrong, I know we all have room from improvement and growth, which is a daily thing. Lord knows, I have a long way to go…but it doesn’t excuse us from maturing in Christ.

If you had a child who is not developing properly in any manner, physically or mentally, wouldn’t you be concerned and consider this child a special needs child or a physically challenged child? Would you not resort to prayer, doctors, and specialist to assist in caring for the child? Would you conduct your own research to obtain as much information as you could to be well informed and look for all the assistance, information, and knowledge and support you could find?

My desire for the book “Bringing Every Thought Captive” is to share simple, practical, yet powerful truths on how to cultivate an intimate relationship with Christ and begin breaking old habits, patterns of thinking, behavior, attitudes, ideas, beliefs, desires and motivations, in exchange for the fruit of God’s Spirit.

And it all begins with our belief…which drives our thoughts…and our behavior.

Per the experts, Thoughts are measurable and active. They can grow, change and influence your decisions, words, actions and physical reactions.

What we really believe is what we have no doubt about. It’s not conscious, it’s automatic. We believe it because that is where we have invested our faith and many times our most deeply held beliefs are invisible to us. We think we know what we believe until life presents a harsh situation or stressful circumstance and our reaction contradicts what we said we believed. What we truly believe, drives our behavior in that moment. This is what we want to address in “Bringing Every Thought Captive”.

Maybe you have heard the old story of the fish tank experience with piranhas.  They put piranhas in a tank with a glass divider to separate them from other fish which they would normally devour. And every time the piranhas would attempt to get to the other fish, they ran into this glass wall. They could see the fish but they kept bumping into this barrier. I’m not sure how many days the glass wall was in place, but when the dividing wall was removed, the piranhas would automatically stop where the divider used to be, because they became conditioned to the environment.

The late Dr. Myles Munroe says, “You can be delivered, but not free”. It’s a mindset. And this is why the scripture says, “be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds”, but how?

The scripture says, to bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. How do we do it?

The scriptures admonish us to walk in the spirit and we won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. How can I do it?   Let me share with you how I learned to do it in “Bringing Every Thought Captive.

Here’s a nugget for you:

Dear friend, listen well to my words; tune your ears to my voice. Keep my message in plain view at all times. Concentrate! Learn it by heart! Those who discover these words live, really live; body and soul, they’re bursting with health. Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Proverbs 4: 20 – 23 Message
